Well folks, we are almost at the end of the stamp preview. Day 31 shows us stamps of 20th-Century Poets.
These poets include:
Elizabeth Bishop,
Joseph Brodsky,
Gwendolyn Brooks,
E. E. Cummings,
Robert Hayden,
Denise Levertov,
Sylvia Plath,
Theodore Roethke,
Wallace Stevens, and
William Carlos Williams.
The reverse of the pane will have a small snippet of a poem by each of the poets listed above. =)
These stamps were made using photos of each poet. Those photos were taken by many different photographers. For a full listing please visit

I like the candid photo quality of these. They seem more intimate than the more common formal portraits.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that only two of the names are familiar to me. My public school education is quite lacking. *sigh*
Oh, wow. I am embarrassed to admit that I have not familiar with every poet here. Now that I've said it, I have to say I shouldn't be, since I have read the works of some awesome rhymers. I wonder how they went about selecting the chosen?
ReplyDeleteNice. Very nice. Some people are so photogenic. Brodsky is rather handsome. Brooks looks like she enjoys laughter, and likes listening to people. Williams looks like a semi-bashful intellectual. Will have to check out some of his work. Bishop looks intimidating and I don't think she shaves her legs. Stevens is cute. Bet he wrote limericks in the privacy of his study. Levertov looks really sharp. Bet she has a giga IQ. I'd love to have dinner and dessert with Hayden. I'd invite him to a home cooked meal. Real Southern food is what I would feed him. Plath. Oh, sweet Sylvia, I would tell you the secrets to survival. I read you when I was in college, and you made me sad and depressed. Hope you're better. Wish you could have stayed. Lovely face. Cummings, oh, the conversations we'd have! Roethke? You make me feel a little sad to see you looking back at me with that look on your face.
Thank you, Misty.
Speck- I like the candid-ness of the shots too. They seem more realistic that way. (And they should right?)
ReplyDeleteLimner- You always have some awesome comments. I actually only knew a few of these poets. And that is shocking to me because I have taken not one...but two poetry courses in college and another in High School. Oh well, like Speck made reference to, my public education is lacking.
